Read what one of her students wrote for a School Essay assignment entitled :
Discuss the significance to you of the school
or summer activity in which you have been most involved .
"As a member of the National Honor Society and co-director of my
school's debate club, I have experienced a myriad of intellectually
stimulating experiences. None of them, however, has challenged my
traditionally educated mind as much as my Flute lessons have every
Monday evening for the past eight years.
My teacher has a cat thing. I think she probably has twenty of them
and though she prefers cats to kids of her own,
she seems to love her students and treats them with an equality
I have yet to see repeated in another teacher. Her opinions are
often formed with an anti-conventionalist bias and frequently based on
outdated beliefs, but the passion and conviction she holds for them is
inspiring. She seems to have stepped outside the normal, adult
world to where the rebelliousness of a teenager still exists and the
only difference is that she pays taxes.
When I started taking lessons from her as a shy nine year-old,
her informality and uncanny approach to teaching was immediately
a challenge to my quiet, anxious disposition. I was more than ready as
a pre-adolescent to take the leap into the norm and surrender any hint
of individualism I may have possessed, afraid to have a stance on
anything from where to play on the playground to what to think about
affirmative action. I realize now that I have always needed her for that
reason; in the public education system we are told to be unique but are
all taught the same things. In my personal education, I have been
told nothing and taught only to think for myself and to play the Flute."
